Great fix, and after a long, frustrating search... I am curious though, as to why that setting changed? I use WORD daily and this was the first time I ran into that...

Can someone acidentally change that setting with unintentional key strokes?

Thanks again!

Many thanks for the NoRecentDocsHistory" to O tip above. I'd been driven in circles trying to resolve the issue and had removed TweakUI to fix it. Of course, that didn't work. But REGEDIT did the trick.

I also see "NoRecentDocsMenu"
(actually that was my original problem). I've set that to O also, and now have my "recent docs menu" back in Excel.

Thanks very much for this fix. I, too, searched MS in vain for an answer. I used the regedit to fix this problem, and found your solution via google at the top of the search list.

>> you should change the value of "Add new documents to Documents on Start Menu" in TweakUI.

Thanks for the tip. However, in the current version of TweakUI, (2.10), the option you need to change is "Maintain Document History," under "Explorer." This will be safer for most folks than messing with the registry.

If you don't have TweakUI it's a free download <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx" rel="nofollow">here.

Thanks very much for posting this fix.

Unbelievable isn't it? I too got the answer (regedit) right away, but isn't it also sad that so many people have to look for a solution to something that Microsoft could have solved in the first place? I mean, why remove functionality from a program that users actually DO find useful? Instead they should get rid of that horrible auto formatting that occurs when you don't want it to (especially with inserting pictures or tables).
