The Boston Globe reports it’s two hundred and seventy.
Hi David,
And 270 is not that much for two reasons: 1- there is 1.1 or 1.2 billions people and 2- they call these trail “roads” but I could not call what is happing on them “traffic”… this is the chaos, have you already been there? It is awesome; an extreme sport for sure (specially when you are on the roof of a bus with 30 other Indians, talking with a cellular phone, going to 80km/h while doing slalom between goats, sheeps, cars, trucks, cycle, etc).
I saw the first western highways somewhere near Agra, but I knew that I was in India because all the time some Tata trucks of at least 10 tons were on you way, doing face-to-face at 80km/h, without caring about anything.
Salutations,
Fred
Yes, I have been there, and I’ve witnessed how horns replace lane markers on the highway. (I’d love to go back.)
But even for a country India’s size, that’s still a lot of deaths, which is why it made it onto the front page of the Globe.
For comparison, there are about 42,000 highway/driving deaths per year in the U.S. – that’s around 115 per day. Our population is just under 300,000 – about a quarter of India’s. Seems like we’re the ones with the more horrifying statistics.
Damn you and your math, Marc!
You’re totally right, of course. Wow.
