Web of Ideas: Leadership

Posted on December 3rd, 2007

On Wednesday at 6:30pm, I’m leading a discussion of whether leadership on the Web is different from leadership off the Web, especially business leadership. In fact, I’m gong to run through my 20 minute presentation for Le Web 3 on this topic. I’ve gotten pretty interested in the nature of the leadership of big collaborative projects, and I’m looking forward to a chance to have my inklings bashed around.

Plus, we serve pizza.

The session is open to all. It’s at the Berkman Center [map]. [Tags: berkman leadership]

I would love to hear your discussion on leadership on the web. However, I am located in Auburn, Alabama. Any chance your discussion would be recorded or streamed live?

    David,

Have you read this? Abraham Zaleznik on Managers and Leaders. I’ve had this in my files for 25 years. It’s from the Harvard Business Review in 1977.

Have you by any chance read the new Gary Hamel book The Future of Management (yes, I know leadership and management are usually two different things). Hamel is saying that there needs to be fundamental management innovation (he suggests that organizations and executives are using 19th-century thinking with 20th-century tools and processes in a rapidly densifying Web 2.0-ish context)for the 21st-century. The way(s) he articulates the issues throughout the book seems to clearly address a similar necessary transformation in what we understand as leadership.

Here’s a CIO Insight interview with him (management as we know it has run its course, things need to be drastically different).

And I salute Terry’s mention of Zaleznik .. and there are others that come to mind (Argyris, Bennis, Ackoff, Handy, Emery and Trist, etc.). IMO, much of what was written 25 - 30 years ago, notably with respect to quality of working life / socio-tech systems thinking and design principles is very (I think) applicable to leadership for the emerging environment that is accompanying the march of social computing into the enterprise setting.

    Hi David,

Are you going to post any of the discussion thread, or a summary of it?

Did people agree with your idea that Web leadership is different?
