John Edwards was our only hope for getting the country back into the positive lives we once lived. That has all disappeared during the 8 years that this currant administration has been in office! What a shame that so much damage has been done in those 8 years. Giving and Giving of our money to foreign countries,AS we here are being ravaged with debt,jobs LEAVING,homes being repoed ,,many displaced men women and children with no where to go. I do not think that the people in washinghton have any idea how our middle class live nor do they care!! John Edwards was our man and with God helping one day he will make it there,climb, the highist of mountains to get there one day but i can see him.. only him doing what many people wanted and that was a good man like Edwards!!No one else can do this job,,it is very frighting..

Thanks, Dave, for putting into words exactly what I feel about the Edwards campaign. I too am a huge fan of Elizabeth. But I think Edwards did a big service to the nation in his campaign, and I feel very, very bad that it is over.

He was the only candidate saying what I think the country most needs to hear. Anyone who doesn’t realize that we are in a class war in this country and that the wealthy elite and corporations they control have already won is just not paying attention. And I’m afraid that issue will get less play without him in the debates pushing it.

I was sad to see Edwards bow out so early. I think this country could use a good dose of conventioneering, and a brokered convention might remind us of policy issues that we’d like to see in the platform of our party.

The way it goes with a defacto nominee going into the convention, there’s a lot less room for citizen input to how we want our candidate representing our interests. With primary vetted nominees, the party runs on the candiates platform. With convention vetted nominees, the candidate runs on the party’s platform. Conventional wisdom regarding the importance of showing unity at the convention, using the convention as a political rally instead of a working session is probably wrong. I suspect it is a narrative shoring up the needs of those who finance campaigns and want to lock in their bets early.

Pity. I thought John Edwards was the best of the pack.

Obama just doesn’t impress me. He seems more a good speech-maker than anything else. He strikes me as such a inexperienced political lightweight.

Edwards was more inspiring in his speech today than he has been in months and months. I think it reflects his freedom now to represent his own dreams and feelings without calculations. I, too, am sad to see him go, but I am happy to see his creative passion back in his face. He really looked happy.

I think it would be interesting to hear David on the topic of classifications which clarify by simplifying.

As I recall, he speaks of the power of a tree-based system to inherit what’s “above it”â€”that is, if we know that a coot is a bird we know it lays eggs, has wings, is alive and is made of matter. There’s a lot of power there, obviously.

This is not, however, what makes Weber’s “ideal types” interesting and useful, or any other system which attempts to understand by first applying a simplifying classification. I never went into German historiography and I don’t know if David went into it, as distinct from German philosophy, but I’m thinking there’s something smart to say there, preferably by him.

On Edwards, I’d love to hear what David did for him, and better, what his advice would be for a political candidate generally.
