Multimedia aggregation point

Apture, a free app I’ve been using on this site for many months, enriches links. You select a phrase in your blog and click the magic button, and Apture suggests links to you from multiple sources and in multiple formats. You select the ones you want, and Apture then puts a link in your post that, when clicked, pops up the selected info, and will play even play the selected video or whatever that. For example, here’s an Apture link that will display info that I’ve selected about Madonna.

Now Apture has done a special data collection for Congresspeople. Great idea. Click on the little Congressional dome next to the Nancy Pelosi’s name to see an example. (The Washington Post has started using Apture for this.)

  1. it shows up even on roll over to me

    cool

  2. fascinating use of what has been a very interuptive (is that a word?) advertizing technique.

I find the roll-over feature annoying – can it be turned off so that the link requires a click?

  3. Yes, you can turn off the rollover (I don’t like those either). When the box comes up, click on the ? icon in the bottom right corner. You’ll get preferences that allow you turn Apture off entirely, or just turn off rollovers.

  4. The effect is completely lost, though, if you read the material in a feed reader. At least in FeedDemon, the regular link to Apture at the beginning of the post is visible and clickable, but the link to Nancy Pelosi doesn’t appear at all – her name is there, but just as regular text.

  5. @liz
    thanks for the tip.

  6. I complained about the rollover months ago, and they added an option for the blogger (me) to turn it off for all readers. I can’t find it now, though. I don’t like things popping up at my readers, even if they can opt out of it.
