I used to read his articles-columns every month in Scientific American in the late 1950′s into the 60′s. They were terrific and I only wish I had been able to learn more math from them-my fault, not his for trying! He wrote very clearly and well and was very entertaining. He seems quite modest from the NY Times obituary.
It was interesting to see that I read him earlier when I was even younger and he was editing Humpty Dumpty, a magazine I remember enjoying as a young child.
Quite a guy!
