Former philosophy majors

Here’s a list of famous people who started out as philosophy majors.

You can take this either as evidence of the utility of majoring in philosophy, or as evidence that if you want to succeed, you should flee from your background as a philosophy major.

  1. I would just add that the world might become a more conscious place if everyone began as a Liberal Arts major! Usefulness in a career and success in society are better left to Graduate School.

My sense of what a University education could be pre-dates the existence of the Corporation! I studied at Oxford one summer, and it was very humbling to eat in a dining hall that had been constructed prior the voyage of Christopher Columbus!

As our good friend Ilan Bizburg said about Bucknell (he was a chemistry major who was struggling to become a philosophy major) – “I came here to learn, not to know”.

It seems to me your background in Philosophy has been much more of a blessing than a curse. I am not sure you would have arrived at the place you are today if you had been a Computer Technology Major. Of course there was no such major back in the Precambrian 60’s.

  3. Wow, great list !

I must send it to my son who dropped some other studies, moved to Warsaw and started a 5 years course of Philosophy ! (analytically oriented as it must be among descendants of Lvov-Warsaw school)

I sometimes used to think he made a bad choice not following his father path (physics, chemistry, computer science), but with my own love of philosophy and this great list my load of care for his future is much eased !

    :-)
