San Francisco and London

Here are two old films of city streets. (Thank you, Andrew Weinberger! And, yes, he is my brother.)

San Francisco, 1906:

London, 1927, in color, thanks to Claude Friese-Greene :

(Wikipedia explains that Friese-Greene exposed each alternate frame through two different color lenses.)

  1. These are amazing. The first, especially, is mesmerizing, with the easy mix of vehicles and pedestrians on the streets, enabled by drastically slower and less traffic than we have now.

I was really surprised by the dominance of men in the San Francisco film (there aren’t many pedestrians in the London film) — there are at least 10 men to every 1 woman.
