Links with Value

Kevin Marks proposed to the emergent democracy list yesterday a way to flag that just because we're linking to something doesn't mean we agree with it. Among the benefits, this would give Google and other apps that count links a way to judge whether the link should count as a recommendation.

After we kicked it around for a while — wondering, for example, whether it should take a binary value or a range and whether we should call it "whuffie" — Kevin formulated the proposal. We're calling it "vote links" (not my favorite since voting is just one application) and it's simplicity itself: you optionally add "vote=X" to any link, where X can be "1", "-1" or "0". To take Kevin's example:

<a href="http://ragingcow.com" vote="-" title="nasty corn syrup drink">Raging Cow</a>

The best place for info is Kevin's site where he has a discussion and links to other list members' blog entries.

I like this idea a lot. Please see http://w-uh.com/index.cgi/articles/030216-weighting_links.html for my thoughts on this...

Alan Wexelblat implemented something along these lines using a proxy server a few years back. The system kept track of aggregate browsing behavior and colored links based on frequently former browsers had clicked there, analogous to a trail being worn in by repeated use. Here's a paper:

I blog because...
- I enjoy the process of writing.
- I know that people enjoy reading what I write, and I get pleasure from their satisfaction.
- MovableType is a fun and fascinating toy to play with.
- I feel that through blogging I can help friends and future friends better understand what makes me tick, which in

itself may hopefully lead to more harmonious relationships.
- Sometimes I need to get stuff off my chest... either wonderful exciting stuff

that's making me bounce around, or contrastingly depressing stuff that's weighting me down.
- From a minor perspective, the addition of content to my site increases my site's visibility and desireability, and

hence revenueability :D
- It's a bit of a showcase for (enlightened) future employers.
