Venice and Florence

On Wednesday, 7 of us - my wife and two children, my in-laws and my sister-in-law - will be going to Venice and Florence for a week. That is, 3.5 days in each. I've been to Venice and Florence a few times, but if you have favorite places other than the Big Tourist Spots, want to let me know? (If you recommend restaurants, keep in mind that 4 of us are vegetarians and don't eat fish.)

TIA, which used to mean Thanks In Advance before it meant Total Information Awareness.

By the way, I'll be blogging it for the Boston Globe. Details soon.

I recommend that you find the time to visit Lucca (in Tuscany too as Florence)!
Email me if you want other info .
Best Regards
Luca
P.S. I'm little biased living near Lucca :-)

Have a great time--I thought you were going to Vienna??? In Vienna, my best tip is to ride the two "circle" trams (one clockwise, the other CCW--I think they are #1 and #2) around the center of the gorgeous marble/gilt/extravaganza city. But I haven't been to Venice yet...

The Boboli gardens in Florence. There are tourists there but the garden is so big it doesn't really matter.
And if you want a caffe latte don't say "caffe latte" because that's something grandma serves you in a big bowl when you're five. Ask for a coffee with milk (caffe con latte) and they'll get it. Took me three months to get that one right:-)

Ah, wonderful! In Venice, note all the different types of boats. Walk around and get lost then follow a canal home. Walk down small streets and stop in for wine and little treat food instead of dinner. Ahhhh...

Florence - I second the Boboli Garden suggestion. Walk around the neighborhood around the garden - lots of little galeries and tratoria that are off the tourist path. Look up at the amazing buildings.

I think there is a bit more in this semi-never-finished essay http://www.fullcirc.com/writing/italy.htm

OH, I love modern art, so loved the Guggenheim museum in Venice.
