Slate has an interesting article on a lewd ad for Puma sneakers that's been circulating. Is it a parody or a devious plan by Puma? And what should Puma's reaction have been? As Doc may have once said: Markets are conversations. And, yeah, it does seem to matter what the conversation is about. Posted

Puma has denied any link whatsoever with the ad, even threatening those that host the images in their servers with copyright infringement and ten other things. Of course, how prurient of them to protect their image, but although definitely racy, all I have seen about those ads are positive comments.
Puma should have embraced the ability to generate viral marketing, instead of pussyfooting around a non-issue, negating the ads value and consigning them to email oblivion.
And their competitors launched a campaign with a porno actress. Which would you buy? If you are Puma, which is your market?

This is the first I'd heard of it, and other reason why JOHO is my first source for everything from philosophy to soft porn. I wonder how many right wing religious fundamentalists and left wing evil-subviral-marketing iconoclasts will be wearing these babies? Perhaps these groups could get together and protest this. It might lead to a really beautiful thing.
