Take a look at a presentation given by David P. Reed (CableLabs' CTO and not that other David P. Reed) to the FCC's Technological Advisory Committee in April. Slide 6 shows the ratio of download traffic to upload traffic trending down from 2.0 to 1.4 in just the months of May to September 2001. There's no data for later than that. Here's a screen capture of the relevant chart:
Is it reasonable to assume that the trend has continued? If so, by now, we're uploading more stuff than we're downloading. Wow! So much for thinking of the Internet as a broadcast medium. (Thanks to Dewayne Hendricks for pointing me to this document.) Posted

Apologies in advance for my ignorance and/or stupidity.
I'd like to understand more clearly exactly what is meant by upstream and downstream.

We're now uploading more than we're downloading. Sorry for the confusion, and I've fixed my original blog entry to make it clearer (which, unfortunately, will make your comment seem unfounded...sorry!).

David: doesn't this mean that while once upon a time we all used to download 2x what we uploaded, but now in the imminent age of Blog enlightenment we're downloading 1.4x the upload rate. We're still downloading more, but less so.
Also, if we get to that point where we are only uploading, then who's reading all this crap?

I have one thing to say: Simpson's did it!

Homer visits Disco Stu’s “Can’t Stop The Learnin’” Disco Academies kiosk at the Franchise Expo.
Disco Stu: Did you know that disco record sales were up 400% for the year ending 1976? [points to a chart for the years 1973-1976] If these trends continue … aaaaaaay!

aiy...
most of those upload traffic may be coming from the auto backups.

Most of the upload traffic is spam, and the measure is off because of caching.
But this chart is nowhere close to accurate, because back in the days of text-only displays, the download ratio was from 10:1 to 100:1, and graphics on the web would have to make it even more uneven.
There's no way web-surfing generates equal amounts of upload and download. Consider your own usage.
