How many hits are there in Google on "weblog"? How many on "blog"? What's the total number of mentions for weblog and blog? (Hint it's about 8x the number of mentions of "web log" in quotes.) Answers within an order of magnitude count as correct and will be placed in a sweepstakes the grand prize of which is the chance to imagine having won a real sweepstakes. The solution is in the first comment to this blog entry. Posted

ANSWER TO QUIZ
weblog
1,580,000

"web blog"

Note: Google's reported hits change mysteriously when you rerun searches, so don't bother posting that you got different numbers; I copy and pasted these.

According to http://google.blogspace.com/ it is Google dance currently http://dance.efactory.de/. This may explain the differences in results.
There is a tool to do comparisons on Google:

Lately I have been running all of my searching as parallel trials of Google and AllTheWeb.com and the results are not encouraging for Google -- I invite others to do the same (I created two bookmarklets to search the current selected text and pop the results in a new window) and see if perhaps old Google the Good has perhaps jumped the shark.
For example, AllTheWeb's results ...5,577,477Results for weblog10,469,292Results for blog34,659Results for "web blog"
and you get the same results each time. Notice also that while the ratio is the same, AllTheWeb is getting 5x the number of hits.

Curious also are the results: The top weblog hit for google is just coincidentally the weblog about Google, but on AllTheWeb the top results are webscripts, doc searls, weblogs.com, Robot Wisdom, the Guardian's Theweblogs ...
Which do you suppose is the more likely map of the mindshare reality?
