Divestigative Journalism

After having done absolutely no research beyond reading the papers that I read and then forgetting what they said, it seems to me that the US media in general is neglecting to do investigative reporting of what has to be the biggest story about the current administration: Did Bush lie to us in order to get a war that he wanted?

I get the sense that if the Congress drops the issue, so will the journalists. The media are covering not the issue but the Democratic pursuit of the issue. Investigative journalism, in contrast, would be out trying to track down information on its own.

Is my fact-deprived perception correct? If so, why aren't there journalists out there digging into this story the way a dog digs into a bowl of fresh Pulitzer Prizes?

I heard this phrase not too long ago,  just before I began seeing a rash of articles in Blogville asking the question:  So where are they,  these Weapns of Mass Destruction?  A Google search on this phrase yields quite a... [Read More]

Are you keeping up with Josh Marshall? he’s keeping at these questions, and does have a column in the print world. . . .

And he points to a long article in the current issue of The New Republic by John Judis and Spencer Ackerman dissecting this very issue. Both the article and Josh's response to it are must-reads, IMHO.

It's a start. Hopefully this will get some traction....

Yes, there are various journalists digging in, but where is the team assigned by one of the major dailies?

The British press is in the process of doing to the American press what the Japanese did to Detroit. Neglect of this story is one of many reasons why.

The BBC saw its ratings increase by 28% during the Iraq war.

The Guardian Group, which has done no marketing, has 3 million American readers. The Independent is also building an American audience.

American big media is simultaneously losing market share to the foreign press and blogosphere. This is not a good thing, but it is a little difficult to know what can be done about it.

As usual, right on target. Congress needs to get to the bottom of it, and act accordingly on outcomes.

Check Josh Marshall's blog for 6/20 for an insightful discussion of this: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/june0303.html#0620031102am
