Whether you have time to wade through it or even if you can find a volume since I believe it is out of print, you might want to compare Bucky Fuller's Synergetics to this idea of models vs equations.

In Bucky's 4-dimensional (always time too) geometric approach, the large-scale structures are not the subject of the model, but the small-scale structures which add up to and become the larger system. For example, there's nothing about a caterpillar that suggests a butterfly unless you build a model that starts from the genetic strands or even before, perhaps down to the quark or sub-quark (Bucky's A and B modules) and then approach this minimum geometry along the bindings (edge or point), flexing, recombining and accruing additional primative structures, building up through organic growth.

Thus the hairline precision structural component dimensions in a geodesic dome are a bitch to compute, yet we all know nature has no trouble at all constructing an extremely high-frequency geodesic orange peel.

Put another way, Bucky asks,

"To how many decimal places does Nature compute Pi before it gives up and throws out yet another imperfect bubble in the foam of a white-capped wave?"
