Writing an entry in Linux

...or with Linux, or on top of Linux, or under Linux. I'm not sure, but here I am with my gnome desktop on top of RedHat 9. I've got everything to learn. Unfortunately, I have to start at the most superficial and least interesting aspect of Linux: the desktop UI. I'm assuming that I'm going to find ways to peer under the desktop at Linux itself. Learning how to find a tool on the desktop that will tell me how much space I have left on my drive isn't very rewarding. But that's where I have to start. For example, I just figured out where Gnome hides the connection to my home network; this tells me nothing about Linux but a little about Gnome.

By the way, now that Linux and I are on a first name basis, I'm going to lowercase it.

Are you running Red Hat's stock Gnome? I would suggest you try Ximian Desktop 2. Will give you a much more smooth experience of the desktop. Has a lot of those tools you would think should be easy to find and has most of the in the "right place", so you should be able to actually find them.

Just remember, when you get mad at it, to call it "Red Hate" instead of "Red Hat".
