Anyone know how to actually turn off the XP FilterKeys setting? I have a lazy habit of resting a finger onf the shift key when I'm pausing between words. If I do that for more than 8 seconds, XP asks if I want to turn on FilterKeys. It does this even if I un-check the "Use FilterKeys" box on the Accessibility settings. The box stays un-checked, but the feature doesn't turn off. Note: Saying "Get a Mac" does not constitute help. Thank you. As one of the commeters notes: Hold down both shift keys. Posted

Control Panel, Filter keys, Settings, keyboard Shortcut - what's a Mac?
Posted by: Jim Moran | October 9, 2003 09:19 AM
A Mac comes in one size...Big. I think I'll have one for lunch.
Posted by: Ken Camp | October 9, 2003 09:24 AM
(from the MS KB) To work around this problem, disable the Shortcut option for Filter keys:
In Control Panel, double-click Accessibility Options.
Under FilterKeys, click Settings.
Under Keyboard shortcut, click to clear the Use shortcut check box. Hope this helps.

The only solution of the problem is to leave your habit ;)
Posted by: Paul Miller | October 9, 2003 11:06 AM
Well, If you ABSOLUTELY must keep your creaky, antiquated, hardly working, PC, then at least dump windows and get Linux. That will solve the problem...
Or get a Mac.
Posted by: Patrick | October 9, 2003 03:04 PM
Aha! So that's where the setting is! I'd say D'0h but I'm going to instead claim this as a MSFT UI problem.
As for getting linux: I have linux on a separate machine. As a desktop system (gnome and kde) I've found that it's far less stable than XP. Not only do I have to spend hours finding the command line commands for doing simple things, but the system freezes and crashes frequently. E.g., I just had to reboot in order to restore sound. Now, it turns out that I could also just have killed the right process (artsd? something like that), but how the hell am I supposed to know which is the sound processing process? So, while linux is rock solid as a server, my experience as a desktop end user is that it's not yet ready for desktop end users.

How about:
1. format c:
2. Insert Windows 2000 CD
3. run setup.exe
Newer is definitely not always better. ;-)

Yeah..! I figured it out..! Hit both shifts at the same time..! It took me like 20 minutes.. god that was annoying...
Posted by: Kim | January 24, 2004 09:33 PM
Microsoft says that you just hold down the right shift key for 8 more seconds to turn it off. Worked for me, though no dialog box comes up to tell you so, and you still see the Filter keys icon in the system tray. You see under the general tab that you have the option of turning on or off the original dialogue and the option of turning off or on a sound that lets you know it's back off.
Posted by: Jeremy | February 18, 2004 10:25 AM
BTW...to get the system try icon out of there, look for go to FilterKey settings and uncheck "show status on screen"
Posted by: Jeremy | February 18, 2004 10:26 AM
To turn off the filter keys hold down shift, press F7, then push they other shift key three times. The PC will beep like it does when you turn filter keys on.
Let me know how you get on, Fred Taylor.

Posted by: Mun | June 5, 2004 09:10 PM
thanx aloT BRITT!!!!! stupid filerkeys. You are screwed in any way when you see the dialog appear when you pressed shift for 8 seconds.
If you press OK then nothing works, if you press cancel, shift seems to be stuck, and setting helps neither...
Posted by: tijs | June 11, 2004 10:11 AM
I anyone ever holds the RIGHT shift key, for 8 seconds, a dialog box pops up. Press ESC not Cancel or you'll end up witha "frozen on" shift key and then have to fight it to get it off...

The ControlPanel->Accessibility options did not fix the FilterKeys problem. Pressing both shifts did.
Who the hell thought that an Accessibility option should make make my computer INACCESSIBLE! I hope MS fires that idiot.
Posted by: Kyle Lahnakoski | August 19, 2004 09:44 AM
OK, I have an elementary school lab and have gone through the accessablity options and turned off the hotkey. Problem is these little kids are still locking up the keyboards somehow.
If they leave it for 5-10 minutes it goes back to normal or if I unplug the keyboard and plug it back in that works.
Anyone know how to just disable that stupid FilterKey thing all together?
Posted by: Michelle | August 31, 2004 02:52 PM
Thankgod for this page, yes me- yet another victim of the damn filter keys.
Posted by: X-0ut | September 13, 2004 10:13 AM
It's stupid, but here is the (deranged) rationale behind it. They want to make it so a handicapped person can use somebody else's computer, even if the owner does not use filterkeys. So holding down the shift key is kind of a back door. A regular person can turn it on and off easily, but a handicapped person is kind of screwed without the back door. Kind of like an emergency feature for handicapped people.
Having said that, filter keys is a good thing, but they should make it possible to completely permanently disable this piece of crap. Frustrating turd.
Posted by: Tom | September 15, 2004 05:23 PM
Both Shift Keys worked...you bloody legend! I was about to punch a hole through my monitor.
Posted by: Pedro | September 16, 2004 01:39 AM
Another sad victim of Microsoft's brilliant OS: pressing cancel caused shift to stick, double pressing shifts solved it - thanks, guys!
Posted by: Rob | September 16, 2004 08:23 PM
THANK YOU ALL!
I was so irritated. the two shifts worked. Now I have new method. I seem to do it a ton
Posted by: Ali | September 18, 2004 03:41 PM
Thanks for all the help on this! I also run an elementary school computer lab, and thought I'd lose my mind over this one. I imagine the kids are holding down the shift key and hunting the keyboard for the letter they want to capitalize, enabling this annoyance. WHAT were they thinking to make this a default!!!! I am on my way to disable it, right now, before I become the one with the tremors!
Posted by: Jean | September 21, 2004 08:19 PM
The irony is mind-boggling:
To invent an accessibility feature, that enables
a handicapped person, unable to press two keys at the same time, to use the shift key features.
A feature that has to be disabled...
...by pressing two keys at the same time!!
Bill Gates is the Devil!

Posted by: rob | December 29, 2004 12:32 AM
Both shift keys, thanks that was so fucking annoying. I hold shift for 8 seconds, prompt says hit cancel to cancel filter keys, I do that and jack shit happens.
And they categorize this feature as an "accessiblity" option?!?! I guess if you don't want to access your computer....
Posted by: Dave | January 8, 2005 08:44 PM
I was about to loose what little hair that I had left.....driving me crazy. Thanks for the double shift advice, it worked like a charm.
double shift = banishment to hell for filter keys.
Posted by: Moe | January 15, 2005 01:43 PM
I think we should all give Microsoft, Mr. Gates and everybody else a big "FUCK YOU!" for creating filterkeys, and an even bigger "FUCK YOU MORONIC ASSHOLES" (all typed with filterkeys on of course, because that would be the reason why it's in all caps) for not disabling it when we hit cancel. Thank you guys very much for the double shift advice, I almost lost a report for college I am in the middle of typing.

My PC just started exhibiting "sticky keys" last night for no reason.
All settings under Control Panel/Accessibility are "Off".
All registry values for Flags under "Sticky Keys", "Filter Keys" and "Toggle Keys" are already set as recommended earlier in this thread by "John" on June 22.
The "R,F,L,U and other keys still bring up Windows XP system screens and I still don't know how it got turned on or, more importantly, how to turn it off!
Also, no viruses found on system (Norton) and Spybot S & D gives it a clean scan...
HELP!

Go to Start, down at your toolbar, then Control Panel, then Accessibility Options, then Filterkeys, make sure it is unchecked but you have to also click on Settings and uncheck Use Shortcut then click Apply and then Ok and Voila! No more blanking Filterkeys. Do the same for Stickykeys and Togglekeys if you want them then to go away too forever. For me, I am Filterkey, Stickykey and Togglekey FREE!

I absolutly despise filter keys. So Anyway i did the double shift key thing and that partly helped. Well it got my numbers working again 123 instead of the bloody !@#. BUT IF I DON'T HOLD SHIFT IN IT TYPES CAPS. when i hold shift in it takes off caps. So the letters are still back to front. Numbers are normal, 123, the signs appear when i hold shift in.
i give up for now, hoping the problem fixes itself eventually as i have always previously relied on. Thanks for the double shift advice, i needed my numbers working again and at least it got those back.
STUPID, STUPID FILTER KEYS, WHY ON EARTH DID THEY COME UP WITH THIS. SORRY FOR ALL THE CAPS BUT MY LITTLE FINGER WAS HURTING FROM HOLDING IN THE SHIFT KEY TO TYPE NORMALLY.

Posted by: robert | April 26, 2006 04:52 PM
Thanks all, today this filter key issue S***ED me enough to find what others are doing about it. Unfortunity without a doubt filter keys will magically turn on again: whether it be after a patch upgrade, reboot or other unreasonable excuse like the weather.
After using windows based OS's for over 20 years and Ms-Windows since it's beginning it's typical to realise that MS sees us Ms-Windows users as being retarded (ie: with filter keys ON by default) so they try to prevent our uncoordinated fingers from repeating a key unintentionally ;)
It seems MS(MSN), Google, Aol, etc are all about CONTROL and we should at least wake up to that! I think Ms-Windows is starting to inhibit my creative freedom and I'd rather learn Linux and let our world wide community govern what I can do and not do with computer technology rather than a few powerful companies. I question Mac's too as they recently went from 64 or 32 bit CPU's and are trying to convince people they are doing this for our benefit.... Why do they think people are stupid?

Several months ago this got turned on and I found a form maybe this one and I figured out how to "shut" it off, thank god for two computers. But after I would restart it would always come back, today I got sick of it:
In the accessibility options in the control panel
>under keyboard tab
>ensure that the use Filter Keys is off
Go into the settings and
>uncheck the use shortcut
>click ok
>under general tab click at the bottom click
>Apply all settings to logon desktop
And I recommend the other option to
>Apply all settings to defaults for new users
This finally fixed it permanently upon restart I no longer have the problem. It is really annoying I don't know I how I dealt with it for months, some time holding down shift didn't work so I had to logon and go into accessibility and shut it off that way.
This might be good for handy capped people but I really think they need to work on it. It sucks for everybody else.

I have an old p3 laptop and I use RDP to access my main pc when I want to do something and watch TV at the same time. Is quicker using RDP than doing things on the laptop anyway as it is quite old.
Anyway was reading an ebook and fell asleep woke up with laptop hibernated. Unlocked main pc the next morning to be greeted by a repeated slow beep, half the keys not working and the filterkeys icon in the tray. Odd that i had never come across this before, i thought i had a keylogger or other nasty! Especially as ctrl-alt-del wouldnt work.
When laptop came out of hibernation and asked for password of course nothing i did would work as i had mixture of cases in it. Had to force a hard reboot to get back in.
Presumably, while I was reading ebook and scrolling through with cursor keys I must have managed to rest my fingers on the shift key as i fell asleep lol.

You guys might consider dl-ing xplite. The trial version can clean up this brilliant MS invention for good. Now I can sleep on my shift key.

Great info!
Now for another problem along these lines.
I have a user the had filter keys on and then rebooted her pc.
Now I can't get get logged on (crtl-alt-del)because the filter keys are still active.
This is an XP Pro attached to a Domain.
Any thoughts, I haven't gone over to her office and tried to reboot in safe mode yet.

There's an upside to this: if the richest man in the world can think the implementation of "stick-keys" a good idea, then success has less to do with good judgement than you might assume. So stop kicking yourself over all those lousy decisions you've made that (you thought) kept you from billionairedom. Relax. In truth, all you can do is hope for better luck next time.

You can also try to update your keyboard driver by going to control panel>system>hardware>device manager>click plus sign beside keyboards>right click the installed keyboard driver name>choose update>just in case it asks you to connect to the internet, just say no, not this time>choose install from a list or specific location>choose don't search, i will choose the driver to install>then choose the appropriate keyboard driver. reboot your pc afterwards.
Then i suggest to disable shittykeys i mean stickykeys for good by applying what john proposed and that is by using reg edit or applying the reg file. Hope this is the end of it.

All I can say is this blog saved my PC's life. I have been having the same trouble as you over the past year or so and the only way I could get rid of the shift lock is by rebooting (I could not do this today as I have been running a file over 300 hours and I do not want to start that over again)
Thank-you, thank-you!
PS: Yeah Mac’s are great, but it is like buying a Ferrari – Looks good, runs on premium fuel only, costs a fortune to maintain and has limited support(which is bloody expensive). Give me a PC any day, this way I can still afford a few drinks on a Saturday night!

Thank you all for this long but excellent read it has helped me as well. If your willing to endure my long drawn out story, I would definitely like to tell it you might get a chuckle.
I’m pretty PC savvy & work in the high tech industry so I never expected to encounter something that has been a problem for over 3yrs. Although I new about sticky keys, I don’t have the habit like some do, so I never had to deal with it. Then one day someone at work was showing me how you could use this “sticky key” setting to pull a prank on someone. I thought it was funny, they tried it on me a couple of times. I just reset it through the keyboard settings. Then just yesterday one of the guys tried it again on me as well as changing a ton of other display settings on my pc, including how Internet explorer displays the fonts. I did the usual stuff but got frustrated with the font settings. I was also trying to go home as the car pool was waiting. So I thought I could run the restore point to 24 hrs earlier. That screwed everything up. Now the corp. log in screen would not take the “Cntl Alt Del” just like Steve’s situation. Well I didn’t want to call the IT department, as I knew I could figure it out on my own. Thanks to you all, especially the funny comments, you all made me feel better today. I was able to get into the log in by using the “Right Shift key”. It seemed more than 8 seconds but I waited till the log in box quit flashing then tried the “Cntl Alt Del” keys. Save the day, I also disabled all the sticky keys so they can’t try that one on me again. I must say that I enjoy learning new things but agree with you all that this was frustrating for me as well. By the way I noticed a setting that you can set to disable the sticky keys after 5 min. of inactivity, this way if they try to trick me again it could be that the joke is on them.
Keep smiling. :-)

I have tried all of those things and none work I hope that prick at ms gets fired screw filter keys!!!

To turn off blue keys hold down FN and touch NUMLK
Posted by: Shannon | August 9, 2006 10:23 PM
What annoys me most is... when you move on to another computer and you daydream leaning on the right shift key for the first time... once that dialog comes up you know youre screwed.
The bloody cancel doesn't work! I was testing it and I think the difference between OK and Cancel is... OK turns on filter keys and sticky keys whereas Cancel just turns on sticky keys.
(YOURE PRICKS MS - If youre going to ask me if I want filter keys on, why not ask me if I want sticky keys on too?).
The double-shift works great and then its straight to the disablement for me.

This topic is 3 years old. If he ain't done it by now, it ain't happenin'.
I had the same problem today, which is why I came to this page. Yes, holding down both shifts was they key!

This site has saved me valuble time that I needed for a report I had to write yesterday night/early this morning. What's the point of filterkeys, anyway?
Posted by: Janelle | August 25, 2006 10:50 PM
It's really easy! All you have to do is got Accessibility Options on the control Panel. Then click on settings next to Filter Keys. Then Uncheck show Filter Key Status on screen.
May not work for everyone though because holding down the two shifts and all that didn't work for me as it did for a lot of other people.

Thank you thank you thank you for this posting. This filter key thing was going to put me over the edge.

Thank goodness for this site! Yeah, I was one who decided to "take a rest" and got the filter keys turned on. I was getting a little stressed on trying to shut it off, came to this site, and had fun reading everyone's comments. So, thanks to all who has posted here, I'm no longer stressed!

Wow topic is more than three years old, but still frustrating the hell out of people. My computer was about to go to Davy Jones Locker til I found this site.
Not to be redundant but WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT OF FILTER/STICKY KEYS? I cant see how these things would make the computer more "Accessible" for challenged people, if those of us able poeple become disabled when the features are used. And whomever said earlier that the cancel doesnt work when that screen comes up, IS SO RIGHT.
BTW the double shift thing worked for me and I reset the control panel settings to turnoff the short cut to end the frustration for us daydreamers.
