Symantec Anti-Virus just scanned my computer and found over 700,000 files to look at. Woohoo! I have too many files!
I'm guessing not more than 30% of them are blog entries...

Last year I got a brand new laptop with XP and Office XP pre-installed. I installed AIM, Emacs, and a few other apps. Then the anti-virus software, which promptly scanned and reported on 112,548 files. Note that there was no user data at this point. So you start fresh from a pretty high baseline. I also wonder if the file count includes everything in your internet cache?
Yes, it does include my Net cache. It also includes all the files in the backup file on my external hard drive.
Dennis, remember how the PC version of Interleaf broke DOS file management utilities because we installed over 1,200 files, including one per font size and style? Ah, memories....
Patricia, Norton will have told you by now whether those files are infected with viruses.
You can download free software that will show you which folders are taking up the most room on your hard drive. That may point you to some folders you can clean out. Of course, if you're not careful, you could clean out files you need. DirGraph.exe works ok as does one called "Waste of Space" or some such. Snapfiles.com has freeeware you can download.
You also might try clearing out your Internet cache. If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to Tools->Internet Options...and in the General tab consider pressing the "Delete Files..." button.
(Keep in mind that I don't know what I'm talking about and you follow this advice at your own risk. In fact, before you do anything, create a savepoint in XP by going to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. That might help you if you screw up your system.)
