Bloguestion: Who is king of the jungle?

From Trevor Bechtel:

My partner, Susan, maintains a blog written by her 2nd grade class at http://209.typepad.com

I am writing you today to drum up site visits and comments for a question she has recently posted and would like to receive comments on. I asked some of you to help in this endeavor several months ago with a different question and she appreciated all the comments then. If you choose to go, remember that there are 7 and 8 year-old children reading your comments. Thanks for your participation.

Here's the question:

We were talking and studying about dinosaurs in our class and a debate started in one of our small groups. We want to know who was king of the jungle in the past and who is king of the jungle now?

Is your answer a fact or your opinion?

The answer is not appropriate for young children. Jungles are on there way out, nature preserves are more common these days. Unfortunately it won’t be long until we are left with nothing but a couple of very large zoos. Who is king these days......

I suppose the preceding is just my humble opinion, not fact.

how should we, as in humans know who the king of the jungle is? In animal terms i would say the lion, but in human terms most likely the actual king. our jungles are slowly minimizing, and its animals are going endangered. if everybody helps then we all can put a stop to these crazy , stupid, hunters killing beautiful animals for money. most people will argue about this , but my debate will be louder and longer.

The real king of the jungle is the elephant. Ask any African....

i think the crown king of jungle belongs to the lion for all its not the biggest it is one of the most powerful and most respected animal there is but it just seems there are certain humans that do not respect them and its those few people who is going to end up destroying the wildlife i think there has got to be more to stop this happening and fast!

it kinda got me thinkin. why is lion the king of the jungle? Why not tiger? can someone tell me the fact of it?

I was pondering this question myself. The title seems misplaced. Lions live in the grasslands/Savannah. Tigers are better camouflaged in Rain forest (jungle).

In western culture Lion is the king of the jungle. In asian culture such as China, India, tiger is the king of the jungle. Who is a better fighter, tiger or lion? Well, naturally they don't share same environment. Only in the captivity they live together, The expert view is tiger is the better fighter.
A female tiger can kill a male lion. In a movie filmed in 1936, a female tiger killed two male lions in seperate fghts.
The biggest and deadliest cat is siberian tiger that weighs 1000 pounds and 13 feet long. There is no lion close to that measures.
