A terabyte for $500 and change

TigerDirect is advertising Seagate 120GB drives for $59.99 after the rebate. Applying my unique math skills (i.e., I've never done a calculation correctly), I think that works out to $511.91 for a terabyte of storage. Why, that'd be enough to store an entire blog, with room left over to download Tetris!

Peter van Dijck tracks storage prices over the years. At this rate, you'll be able to get 15 petabytes for $120 in the year 2020.

Storage space halfs in price every year.

According to my calculations, for investing US$10 a month in storage space, you'll have accumulated 15 petabytes (15,000,000 Gigs) of storage space by 2020. That's storage for 142 years of 24 hour DVD quality video.

Yes, Betsy, that's exactly what I'm suggesting. Or, put differently, if you can wait 16 years, in the year 2020, the ducky drive will cost you $0.016.

On the other hand, it might not hurt to have a devil duck handy when Old Nick comes a-callin' in the upcoming apocalypse.

Thanks for the callout. But: you'll be able to *accumulate* (if you start buying this year) 15 petabytes for $120 per year (total investment over 16 years: US$ 1920) in the year 2020. Still amazing!

I wasn't gonna post, even to agree with you on Spyware... However, I have it on good authority, from one Hans Boldt of IBM as well as others, over this past year that what is REALLY exciting is that the price of memory is approaching that of hard drives.

You mebbe need to be an ole dawg of-a OS and/or Schema-designer, to appreciate what changes this could bring, I dunno.
