Because I've been a good white boy, AmericanAirlines has notified me that if I show up at Logan Airport between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., beginning August 9, 2004 and ending August 13, and go to the Training and Conference Center, located between Terminals B and C, with a copy of the email invitation, two forms of government-issued ID, and my nontransferable confirmation number, the TSA may grant me Most Favored Traveler status and only anally probe me if I insist on it. Here's a snippet from the form I'm supposed to fill out:
What's with the line for "Alias Names"? Is that to trap the sort of terrorists who say "Yes" when asked if they are bringing any flammable items on board? Well, sure, why not skim off the retarded terrorists if you can. But I'm not sure I'm feeling all that much safer... Posted

I think that's in case your given name is Virgil I. Grissom, but everyone calls you Gus Grissom instead. Or maybe it's for those who are commonly known by one name ("Mark Twain") that's not their legal name ("Samuel Clemens").
Or maybe you're right, and it is a way to catch really, really, really stupid terrorists.

Or, for those of us who were born under a different name before being adopted or legally having our name changed. Leaving aside maiden names, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to have used a pseudonym. That's why they are legal (for now, and under most circumstances). And guess how long you get privileged white-guy status if the alias list on your get-out-of-strip-search-free card doesn't match the one on your passport.

Hey D. Weinberger- What do you think would be better? I think the "pre-screening" of sorts, is great. If you don't want to participate - DON'T. I hope you don't catch any benefit from shorter lines because some people have gone through the Registered Traveler lanes. Why would you not want to get through security faster? The program just eliminates the chances you'll have to go through a secondary screening. If you're interested in an anal probe, you should probably take care of that before you leave for the airport.
