[I work for Onfolio] It's nice to hear that Onfolio is helping you organize your research. I just wanted to clarify something in your post. We do not store the items saved in Onfolio into an MHT file. We store them in a file format called .cfs that's designed to hold large amounts of data, support full-text and property searching, and be accessible by multiple people at the same time (in Onfolio 2.0.) We do use the MHT file format, but only as one way to conveniently package up content stored in Onfolio and share it with people who don't have Onfolio.

As for the future of Onfolio, we put a lot of thought into that ourselves, and hope we have an answer. I won’t bore you with the details here, but we’re finding that with Onfolio 2.0, we help people do a lot of things a little bit faster and a little bit better, and there are some people whose jobs and academic pursuits benefit enough from this improved productivity to get them to adopt a new tool. Where those people are, you will find us.

Firefox's own CTRL+S has the advantage of being able to save in 3 different formats (Complete Web Page, HMTL only, and TXT), all of which are cross-platform/browser, unlike MHT and CFS. Just save pages to a single directory (or make topical subdirectories) and use Windows' own text search function.

I've also been using Onfolio since version 1.0 and this new version offers so much more it's almost like another program. One of the ways you can help alleviate your concerns about Onfolio's fate is to let people know about all the goodies it offers like a beautifully integrated RSS aggregator and reader with auto discovery of RSS feeds, excellent reporting tools (in the professional version) and really powerful search.

You might also be interested in looking at the group blog Sebastian and the Onfolio team have set up. They've opened participation to their tester community and it's been an excellent addition to the discussion forums for creating conversations about the product.

I was fortunate enough to be at DEMO a couple of weeks ago and was able to spend some time with Sebastian, JJ Allaire, and Spike Washburn from the Onfolio team. I've rarely encountered a group that pays such careful attention to the details. JJ had a particularly great line. When I complimented him on the user interface, iconography, and attention to detail in version 2.0 he replied,

"We designed an entire application that's only 200 pixels wide so we sweated every last one of them!"

Hello, I'm another Onfolio lackey.

MAF and Scrapbook (or even Ctrl+S) will be enough for some users, but others will require the power Onfolio gives you above and beyond those tools.

With Onfolio, you can drag in content from (almost) any Windows application (we even provide a Capture button in Outlook). You can also drag out one or more items from Onfolio directly into Word, Windows Explorer, and most other applications you could reasonably expect.

You can capture entire websites, not just individual pages. You can also make a selection and choose just to capture individual images and links within that selection.

We provide full-text indexing on not just web pages, but also links, PDFs, Office documents, and text files. Our full-text searching is lightning fast and extremely scalable, and provides support for very complex queries (boolean, phrases, prefix, wildcard).

You can "Capture All Tabs". You can create dynamically populating folders based on search criteria (like Outlook's search folders). You can have multiple people collaborate on the same collection over a network.

And of course, you also get a world-class feedreader.

Another program in this category that will be of interest is Surfulater. Surfulater lets you save selected content from a web page as well as complete web pages. It lets you edit your saved content using rich HTML editing, add notes and add links to cross reference information.

Surfulater works with both Firefox and IE. It has a full text search engine and lets you e-mail articles to friends and colleagues, or save them as MHT or HTML + images.

Content is saved in XML making it easy to access from other applications. This also means your information isn't locked inside a propriety database. Just two files store complete knowledge bases so you can carry around your database on a USB Flash Drive for example.
