If Microsoft Word is no longer displaying recently used files in the Files menu, and if the "Recently used file list" option is grayed out in Tools > Options > General, you should change the value of "Add new documents to Documents on Start Menu" in TweakUI. If you're not using TweakUI and if you feel comfortable futzing with your Registry, go here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ Set "NoRecentDocsHistory" to 0. If you don't understand what I'm saying, then you shouldn't be futzing with the Registry. If you do, then you know to export a copy of your registry and you know not to sue me when your whole system starts to smell of burning grease. More info here. [Technorati tag: microsoft] Posted

Thanks for the tip; I couldn't find the option in Tweak.UI, but changing the registry key worked for me.

Thanks. This information allowed us to get a user back in his "happy" place in no time.
I made the change via REGEDIT.

Dude... My first hit on Google and you had the fix. Used regedit. As anyone who has searched MS for help knows you can spend a lot of time looking and get "knowwhere". Thanks for the great tip.

Unbelievable isn't it? I too got the answer (regedit) right away, but isn't it also sad that so many people have to look for a solution to something that Microsoft could have solved in the first place? I mean, why remove functionality from a program that users actually DO find useful? Instead they should get rid of that horrible auto formatting that occurs when you don't want it to (especially with inserting pictures or tables).

Thanks for the tip. However, in the current version of TweakUI, (2.10), the option you need to change is "Maintain Document History," under "Explorer." This will be safer for most folks than messing with the registry.
If you don't have TweakUI it's a free download here.
Thanks very much for posting this fix.

Thanks very much for this fix. I, too, searched MS in vain for an answer. I used the regedit to fix this problem, and found your solution via google at the top of the search list.

Many thanks for the NoRecentDocsHistory" to O tip above. I'd been driven in circles trying to resolve the issue and had removed TweakUI to fix it. Of course, that didn't work. But REGEDIT did the trick.
I also see "NoRecentDocsMenu"
(actually that was my original problem). I've set that to O also, and now have my "recent docs menu" back in Excel.
