Google Maps surprise

Go to Google Maps. Select an address. Have it plot directions to another address. Click on "Satellite." Omigod.

I don't mean to be ungrateful, but how about displaying street names on the satellite image? C'mon, Google, let's get on the ball! :) [Technorati tags: google maps]

Hey, that's great. I tried to get an idea of when the photos for Manhattan were taken, so I zoomed in on an address near the site of the former World Trade Center. (I walk past it everyday so I know its present condition.)

The photo looks like it's been taken at least within the last year, but the leaves of the trees in Battery Park suggest that it was taken before last Fall.

Last time I used the Microsoft Terraserver, you could enter the GPS coordinates and see the corresponding location via satellite photo although these were taken years ago.

Maybe one day we'll be using GPS coordinates along with street addresses for package delivery.

I read somewhere that SAT service google uses for this will be doing a complete remapping late this week or next week.

First thing I thought of when zooming around was how google needs to add a legend or something to the SAT pictures, you are not only when it comes to that.

Really it's only a matter of time before those SAT pics are intereactive themselves, highlighting places of interest etc...or atleast I hope.

On a side note...
Either way I think this is fantastic. Will help with cycling trips, will give me a feel of the roads and what type of traffic I should expect. In addition, I will be able to key off landmarks while riding, keeping me on course.

Its really cool - I could waste hours here... The photos for Michigan are somewhat out of date - the building I work in is not even on the map - but then again it is a new building...

On a related note: Don't know if you've noticed Mappr or mapblog? Interesting tie-ins to geographic location, blogs and Flickr... You can get there from my post on the topic http://www.barrell.com/blog/archives/2005/04/location_locati.html

i did just waste most of an hour with it. fun, even though my local area seems to have been mapped at night. and the addresses are wrong. close, but wrong. recent though, prolly no more than 2 years old.

This is awesome! Will be excwellent for plotting walking routes, etc. And also for checking on ordinary map directions - no more winding roads on a map that turn out to be a mistake and actually a river.

If you're feeling nostalgic for A-to-Zed, try this one:

http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=533258&Y=180057&width=500&height=310&gride=529090&gridn=179645&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=pc&pc=&zm=0&scale=10000&up.x=186&up.y=3

Once the sat photo is loaded, mouse down on the photo.

I’ve created a site to catalogue cool google sat maps:

http://gmaps.nicj.net

Check it out, add maps :)

Actually, the original post asked for street names on the satelite images and this has been created.

Unfortunately its not on the web based maps (http://maps.google.com), but instead in an external application from google called Google Earth and can be downloaded and used for free at http://earth.google.com/

This application's life is similar to that of Picasa, the photo manager and Hello, the photo sharing appliacations. Google aquired Keyhole software and promptly released it with added features under the Google Earth name.

Map 24, Multimap, Google Map, and even National Geographic, they have quite general maps (hwys, roads, towns, that's about it). It's amazing to be able to zoom in close and search, etc, but someone should work on putting out special web maps like multilingual maps, earthquake maps, etc. I am working on that. See my site http://johomaps.com
Give me some feedback please
