Meetup starts to charge

Over at many2many I've posted comments about Meetup's decision to start charging groups $19/month. What will this do to the social dynamics that have made Meetup so important to many of us? Will Craigslist will be the new Meetup? [Technorati tag: meetup]

Scott Heiferman of Meetup responds. A factual correction: Scott says Meetup isn't having financial problems; they just want to make sure that it stays financially viable.

Upcoming.org will be the new Meetup. Andy's been adding a lot of new features lately, and it was shaping up as a decent alternative to Meetup.com even before these new fees were announced. Check it out.

Try www.meetin.org. There is probably already an active social circle in your city. "Make friends, not money!"

I had just assumed the role of coordinator for a floundering "milwaukee area martial artists" meetup...now with the fee I think I may look elsewhere.

I just don't get why Scott didn't decide to make the fee structure tiered in any way. Not just first three months free or anything, though that's an excellent idea, but by size of group. It's ridiculous if a Meetup that's slowly growing and has maybe 8 regulars has to split the same fee amount that a group with 30 people could handle easily even if not everyone chips in. Especially if the goal is to encourage quality, groups need to be given time to develop.
