The Boston Phoenix reports on a new poll that shows that with 5,000 gay marriages in the past year, 48% of the 600 poll respondents say that gay marriage has had no impact on the quality of life in the Commonwealth...and 36% said life has gotten better. Support for the legalization of gay marriage has gone up from 59% last year to 62% now. The issue comes up for popular vote in 2006 when we'll have the chance to amend the constitution to ban gay marriages and permit civil unions. At this point, unless gay marriage is discovered to cause mad cow disease, it's looking like Massachusetts may be able to change its motto to "Where love dares speak its name." I worked for Robert Reich's campaign in the last Mass gubernatorial race, during the Democratic primaries. Not much really - holding some signs, helping out on the web pages and other 'net stuff. It was fun and I was glad to get involved. But it nearly makes me weep to think how much different this "gay marriage" topic would have been dealt with if Robert had been elected governor. He would have embraced it with open arms, and worked hard at making sure it succeeded, rather than fighting it tool and nail, and coming up with a stupid constitutional change against it. We could have been led by a leader, instead of held back.
sigh.

Reich knows that changing the constitution, uneccessarily, dillutes it's intent. About 74% of the population does not support Gay marriage, what about us?
