Blue/Green Alliance

Environmentalists and workers unite! No, that's not an imperative. It's a description. The Blue/Green Alliance brings together the Sierra Club and United Steelworkers.

This makes sense to me since it's recently come to my attention that we've just got the one planet and no do-overs allowed. [Tags: blue_green_alliance environment labor politics]

Blue and Green? Has 'blue' migrated from 'Democrat' to 'Left in general' - or doesn't it make sense to talk about the Left in general as distinct from the Dems? Either way this makes very weird reading on this side of the Atlantic.

Come to think of it, isn't blue-for-Democrat a relatively recent association, which originated as a fairly arbitrary visual shorthand adopted by one of the news organisations during a Presidential election? Or did I imagine that part?

It puzzled me for a while, too, but I think it must be a reference to "blue collar."
