Richard Ericson has a very useful review of Office 2007 in Computerworld. It sounds like a user like me will get nothing of real value out of it, except that I'm a power-user of PowerPoint, so I'll likely have to make the switch. The review doesn't mention whether Microsoft has managed to fix the Word revision tracking bugs that have been there for the past ten years. And not just the bug that causes files to go corrupt if they're too heavily revised. I mean things like not handling paragraph joins correctly; after backspacing two paragraphs together, the only way to get rid of the invisible paragraph marker that remains is to delete a few characters backwards and a few characters forward of the join. Also, if multiple people go through multiple revision cycles, I haven't found a way to show only the latest revision's changes by a particular person. Also, if you toggle off displaying your revisions to a document and then make a change, it toggles the display back on. I don't know what software number Office is up to, but maybe after spending another $329 to upgrade to the Professional version (which should be called the Penultimate version since $539 is the upgrade price for the Ultimate version), I'll have a word processor with rev tracking that works. Or maybe it's time to switch to Open Office for real. (Alas, I seem to be stuck with PowerPoint, though. I use all its animation features and I can't show up to give a speech for which I'm paid with a presentation that my hosts can't run.) [Tags: microsoft office reviews] Posted

I carry OpenOffice on a USB Flsah Drive (http://portableapps.com) which makes it much easier for me to run my presentations on ANY computer that's provided for me.
So, yes, it is time to switch to OpenOffice for real. I did it after 2.0...I give speeches and presentations (being an instructor of several computer literacy classes) and I didn't want to use Microsoft's stuff...so I switched. :)

The flashdrive is a good idea, but not all the hosts I deal with are comfortable relying on a speaker's flashdrive working. They want PowerPoint.
And OO's powerpoint clone isn't quite as good as ppt in ways that matter to me.

OpenOffice will let you export your presentation as a Flash SWF file. That should preserve all your effects, and Flash can run just about anywhere.
(disclaimer: I'm not a heavy presentation-giver these days so I can't vouch for this in practice).

Or, do what I do on paid speaking gigs: Don't use PowerPoint at all and create the images aurally.
Them: Please tell us what A/V you need
Me: Only a microphone and a podium with a light.
Them: Okay, make sure you send us your PowerPoints (sic) at least 10 days ahead.
Me: I don't use PowerPoint. I'm a PowerPoint-free zone.
Them: Well, we need to pre-load your PowerPoint slides on the conference computer at least a week ahead of time.
Me: I don't use slides during a talk. I just talk.
Them: You just... talk? Without slides?
Me: That's right.
Then: Then what do people look at during your talk?
Me: Me.

Have you considered using Slidy?
Still, might not work for you. I have to use PowerPoint as part of my work because other people use it. I've managed to use OpenOffice and export to PPT on some occasions, but I mostly just have to work in PowerPoint (and thence ask Tufte for forgiveness).

Maybe you could split the difference.... buy PowerPoint 2007 and then use OO for everything else? I realize that buying "a la carte" MS Office products is definitely not very cost effective, but surely PowerPoint 2007 can't be grossly expensive (and I'd consider $539 grossly expensive for an UPGRADE).
Or you could become an aggressive OO proponent -- take a CD with the installation package to each speaking appointment, and who knows, maybe some of them will make the jump?!

Powerpoint is a crutch for those who cannot give good presentation.
Though I have had the fortune to see somebody in action who could give good presentation AND who gave good Powerpoint at the same time.
Anyway, if you need Powerpoint, you need Powerpoint.
