I read the first page of The Da Vinci Code and didn't like it, so possibly I don't count as a leading expert on the topic. ToTheSource has apparently read the whole thing:
In case you're wondering, the four areas are: Constantine, the Knights Templar, the Priory of Sion, and da Vinci as a flamboyant homosexual. There's also a sidebar about the guy who made up the stuff about the Priory that, apparently, Dan Brown fell for. [Tags: da_vinci_code] Posted

If you didn't like The Da Vinci Code maybe you'll like its parody, The Asti Spumante Code by Toby Clements. Well, you'd have to read the "original" first ... ;-)

Regarding the link "ToTheSource:" I think Dan Brown may just be a terrible novelist and not particularly interested in rocking anyone's faith or understanding of christian heritage.
It's a good story with a great fictive premise, ineptly told and embarrassingly rendered. A novelist owes it to his audience to get the facts that he's not making up straight. In this Brown fails, even if the "facts" that he does make up are intriguing, engaging.
The christians who take umbrage might better spend time in prayer and good works, ignoring and letting go of Brown's work entirely. Getting worked up about popular fiction seems a misplaced use of energy.
Of course I'm one of those who appreciates Serrano's "scathing critique on modern urology," so take what I have to say with a grain of salt.

For some reason, I did not fling the book across the room when I came to the line declaring that Leonardo da Vinci invented public-key cryptography. I just can't remember what that reason is....

Folks, its a fictional novel, and I found it an entertaining and quick read. But expecting it to be accurate if like expecting movie physics to be correct.
