My friend David Sifry has resigned as Technorati's CEO because it's grown to the point where it needs a person with strengths other than the founder's. He'll stay on as chairman of the board. The company is looking for a replacement. In the meantime, a triumvirate will act as an Office of the President. Technorati also announced it's laid off eight employees in order to "focus" and "adjust our expense structure," according to Dave's email. That's painful. I wish them well. Dave, too. Dave is one of the people who keep contributing and giving. I can't wait to see what he does next. (Disclosure: I am on Technorati's board of advisors.) [Tags: dave_sifry technorati] Posted

A very cautionary tale. One can suck-up to A-listers like a hemorrhoid (no personal offense meant), yet Google or similar make it all for naught.
P.S.: If you don't mind, do you have stock or stock options or similar in Technorati?

Seth, am I allowed to have friends, people I like, trust, respect and hope in? May I express my love for them? Or can I only be trusted if I call people hemorrhoids? Your first paragraph is beneath you, Seth.
See the disclosure statement linked to in my post. At this time, I have no stock or options in Technorati. Someday I might. If I do or don't, I'll still think the world of David Sifry, and will still find much to admire about Technorati.

David, you misread my first paragraph - it was a reference to Technorati's tactics of serve-the-A-list, as in the "Top 100" and other tributes to those with the most attention to send back (send attention to them, and they send attention to Technorati). This has been much discussed over the years, sigh, so I thought it was clear, especially with the "no personal offense meant" pre-emptive clarification. That is, I wasn't calling any person a hemorrhoid - I was referring to Technorati's PR strategy.
The point is that the attention of the A-list can't compensate for the market power of a behemoth like Google to take over a niche. Getting a lot of hype behind a company won't save it from the 800-pound gorilla of the territory. Again, nothing to do with you personally there.
Now, regarding the stock options question, as I've said many a time, I'm fascinated by how the system all works. And also you're one of the best sources of information on the matter. Of course it's all about the love, but there's many different senses of that word.

Aha. I misread your first paragraph. To be fair to myself, it's not the clearest paragraph you ever wrote. And, as you know, people frequently interject "nothing personal" or "no offense" precisely at the point where they're being personal and offensive.
No one (?) says (except hyperbolically) that the Web is perfectly flat and that all voices are equally heard. In that it mirrors the old world of old media. I feel like you and I have both said these things too many times. We ought to have an abbreviation so we can just post and move on.

Well, I can see how it could be misread, it was written hurriedly, and with a bit of anxiety. I'm just saying I didn't intend it as you took it.
This wasn't a comment on the false promise of flat and being heard (remember my New Year's Resolution not to argue this in the lion's den). It was about how hard it is to make a successful business out of the exponential curve.
