| Elizabeth Holtsman: Impeach Bush
|
Elizabeth Holtzman, who was on the House Judiciary Committee during Nixon's impeachment — ah, memories! — systematically goes through the reasons to impeach Bush now. A snippet:
At the time, I hoped that our committee's work would send a strong signal to future Presidents that they had to obey the rule of law. I was wrong.
Like many others, I have been deeply troubled by Bush's breathtaking scorn for our international treaty obligations under the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Conventions. I have also been disturbed by the torture scandals and the violations of US criminal laws at the highest levels of our government they may entail, something I have written about before.
These concerns have been compounded by growing evidence that the President deliberately misled the country into the war in Iraq. But it wasn't until the most recent revelations that President Bush directed the wiretapping of hundreds, possibly thousands, of Americans, in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) — and argued that, as Commander in Chief, he had the right in the interests of national security to override our country's laws — that I felt the same sinking feeling in my stomach as I did during Watergate.
In addition to his deserving it, we ought to impeach Bush just to let history know that we took his abuses seriously. (Here's a scenario for how it might happen.)

There's not going to be an impeachment. It's well past time for Democrats to stop pining for a "miracle" and start coming up with a compelling platform that might actually win an election.
As to the surveillance program - everything published about it indicates that it involves foreign nationals talking to people in the US. If you think that the NSA should ignore such things, then you're nuts, plain and simple. This is "domestic spying" in the same way as Lincoln's taps on telegraph communications in and out of the south was during the Civil War.

I'd like both a platform and an impeachment, James.

I have to agree with James. The talk of impeachment will end up likely hurting the Democrats. Yes, I believed that the administration misled us on many counts but intelligence agencies - American and foreign - believed that Iraq housed WMD long before W arrived.
There's a very large centrist population in this country that probably is not up for another impeachment battle. The Democrats need to think about them and their needs.
Besides, if Bush is impeached, we'd get Dick Cheney as president.

David,
You won't see any of the things you want until your party figures out how to win elections. And a large part of that will involve them having to figure out what they are for - all I can see is what they are against. There's nothing that even vaguely resembles a positive agenda on that side of the aisle. The 2006 Democrats look a lot like the 1935 Republicans - their traditional coalition is gone, and they are utterly baffled by that fact.

"...figure out what they are for - all I can see is what they are against."
The formulation is appealing (impeaching Bush might be a good start), but can anyone tell me what the president's party is *for,* without descending into convoluted explanations of why we have to bomb the hell out of the people we're saving, or accept a growing deficit and expanding government? What, for example, was Bush's 2004 campaign *for*?
Besides, we won an election in 2000, and, very possibly, in 2004.

It's been awhile, but I hope someone is still checking. We're now into June and Bush has done so much more, all of it bad. A second case of the brutal massacre of Iraqis by U.S. troops has been unearthed. Illegal spying, nothing more done for New Orleans and hurricane season here again, Bush trading our nuclear expertise for Indian mangos while telling Iran they can't develop anything nuclear. We need to impeach Bush now. Anybody still out there? But if the scenario holds true, and August brings it, better late than never.

Impeach Bush yourself! This is much more than just a petition.
There's a little known and rarely used clause of the in the rules for the House of Representatives which sets forth the various ways in which a president can be impeached. Only the House Judiciary Committee puts together the Articles of Impeachment, but before that happens, someone has to initiate the process.
That's where we come in. In addition to the State-by-State method, one of the ways to get impeachment going is for individual citizens like you and me to submit a memorial. ImpeachforPeace.org has created a new memorial based on one which was successful in impeaching a federal official in the past. You can find it on their website as a PDF.
You can initiate the impeachment process yourself by downloading the memorial, filling in the relevant information in the blanks (your name, state, etc.), and sending it in.

More information on the precedent for submitting an impeachment
memorial, and the House Rules on this procedure, can also be found at
the above address.
If you have any doubts that Bush has committed crimes warranting
impeachment, read this page: http://ImpeachForPeace.org/evidence/
If you're concerned that impeachment might not be the best strategy
at this point, read the bottom of this page: http://ImpeachForPeace.org/

I attended a conference on Impeachment, you were there. Nothing seemed to come of it. Last week I saw Bill Moyers with Nichols and Fein. Now we are in the perpetual war our Founding Fathers feared. We have the Bush-Cheny monarchy and no one in politics is standing up against it. The Founding Fathers mentioned impeachement something like 11 or more times in the Constitution. Our freedom is eroding and no one with clout is doing anything about it. I don't know what to do aside from writing to my senators, Pelosi (shame on her), Reid. How can this be happening? They must be stopped. We must stop them NOW!
