Glenn Fleishman well covers the iPhone announcement. Yes, he got to fondle one, and he loves the interface. In a follow-up, he notes that it's a closed system and wonders what that means for running skype-like VOIP on the device. I can't say that I'm filled with technolust for an iPhone. On the other hand, I don't find my drool response stimulated by the iPod's imperial pearly whites...despite Steven Levy's perfect book. I would expect Apple to issue dev kits in the near future. The thing does obviously do Dashboard Widgets, and although it wasn't said explicitly, one hopes that that means the many thousands of third party widgets might be made to work on it, too.
I'm less optimistic about doing 3rd party voip, though. That might be where Cingular drew the line in the sand: go ahead and use your iTunes for ringtones, but we're not going to let you Skype.
Time will tell.

I just experienced, and first learned about, the white screen of death on my daughter's six month old iMac...I wonder how enthusiastic iPhone users will be when that white screen pops up one day and the device doesn't operate?
