Jeneane blogs about what beta means these days. I, too, remember when beta was a term used in the product development process and was Greek to the marketing department. But, as Jeneane says, the walls between customers and companies are tumbling, and the moment of publication/shipment is getting all fuzzified...usefully. In one of the writerly communities of which I am a part, "beta" has become vernacular for "editor." So one might speak of a beta-reader, meaning the colleague who reads and comments upon an early draft, or one might refer to a piece of writing being "in beta" when it is undergoing peer review and revision...

Beta, however, is still a very important step. Even when you skip it or call it another name - you usually end up doing it! :-)

In the good old days we had some modesty about the beta testing period. We did it behind closed doors. With the lights out. Then we released the infinitely buggy "release 1.0" versions and let our customers squabble with us about how to prioritize getting the bugs fixed.

Very well organized site. I particularly liked the resources section.
Will use it to plan my next trip to NWT. See you soon.
