David Kirkpatrick at Fortune.com has a fascinating inside look at the rise of Ray Ozzie at Microsoft. Ozzie was put in charge of "Webifying" Microsoft, and was given wide range to Make It So. The question is whether this effort is going to Microsoft-ify the Web as it Webifies Microsoft. How much of the Web's values have to be undermined to make it safe for Microsoft? Why do we need to undermine the Web to play in it? If you see evidence of this, please let me know and I'll call it out -- publicly.

Robert, I am deeply fearful of Microsoft's "trusted" computing efforts. I am also very worried about how Microsoft's identity system will unbalance the playing field in ways that are disastrous for political dissidents living under tyrannies, as well as having bad but less serious effects on the social nature of the Net.

Hmmm, I have a video with the DRM team. I called them "evil" and they did a pretty good job of explaining themselves and the kinds of things they are trying to do. Not really for the Web at all, though. More for HDTV video coming from Hollywood.
But, the identity system doesn't worry me from that angle. So many things would have to play out for that to even be a worry to me that I'm not too worried. Now, if Google and Yahoo both agree that Microsoft's system is what they are gonna standardize on, then let's talk. I don't see that happening.
But, I'll keep my eye on these two technologies.

Robert, I know and appreciate that you keep your eye on these things. Thanks. We count on you.
But, Microsoft still scares me in both these areas.
It may be intended for HDTV - and there's a separate argument that Fair Use should hold even for HDTV from Hollywood - but all content is going to be delivered over the Net, and DRM is going to encourage a migration to restrictions on use that we are free to reject only if we're willing to become cultural hermits.
As for the identity system: Google and Yahoo don't have to standardize on them. If Amazon and eBay (etc.) do, then we will again be presented with a Devil's bargain. Worse, suppose China standardizes on it? How happy are we that we're giving China (as just one convenient example) tools for controlling content and identifying dissenters?
IMO, the Web is worse off because Microsoft is pushing both of these changes. But, that's why we have opinions...
