Resolving tags

Yesterday's post about what tags should link to has spurred some really interesting discussion. As a result, I've mocked up a page that has some of the features and properties I'd like. It's where you'd be taken if you clicked on a tag at the bottom of one of my posts. (I use "taxonomy" as my example.) It aggregates all of my posts tagged "taxonomy" and includes pointers to the Wikipedia "taxonomy" article, Flickr photos tagged "taxonomy", and Technorati's aggregation of everyone's posts tagged "taxonomy." One of the advantages of this approach: The page is mine and is (in theory) dynamic, so if Technorati (say) goes out of business, I can change the template and thus not have every page contain a broken link.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to code create such pages automatically. [Tags: tagging tags]

I too have found the discussion fascinating and totally agree with your mockup. I've also been thinking about how to do this in MovableType automagically, and I think it can be done using keywords, without actually modifying the post (like the Technorati plugin I currently use that inserts links for keywords). By using templates, I'll bet you can even do it dynamically. I'm going to try and look at it today.

Here's an example of the tag pages I use on my own site: BBC.

I don't actually manually tag my posts - what I do is define each tag as a regular expression (the 'definition') and then let my system auto-tag my posts. That way, I can apply tags retroactively as well, so if a new tag becomes popular I don't have to go through a bunch of old posts.

Using the regex I simply create an index file in my database, and the topic page (tag page) is very easy to display.

This is all very easy to do; I've been doing it for many years (easily predating 'tags', properly so-called). If anyone wants my code they're welcome to it. But really, it's not rocket science.

For a group blog site I am designing, we are creating something similar in Wordpress using its "category page" template features. I think you can do this kind of thing using Moveable Type's subcategory features.

The basic idea is having a template for your tag page that takes the tag label and uses it to fill in the blanks on the page, including in URLs to sites like Wikipedia, and queries against your blog database.

There are some tricks too, in terms of getting the blog engine to know the difference between tags (on-the-fly labels) and bona fide categories (predefined labels), if you want to recognize that difference. We do this by defining all of the tags as subcategories of a "tag" category :-)

On the site I am working on, we also leave space for additional contents to be added "by hand" to the tag pages, e.g., we can manually add links to different sites, or our own definitions of the tag terms, or own photos, etc. This is more what we're after: they aren't collaborative tags in the broader sense of hundreds of people's stuff being crunched by an algorithm into some kind-of amalgam of meaning--they are the tags of a few people who want to communicate some meaning directly.

I have been thinking along a similar line lately , basically trying to think up a resolver for object identities (see http://pudo.org/blog/2006/04/15/proposal/).

Maybe I'm too conservative, but I simply don't trust plain tags for a variety of reasons (i.e. because they don't make up a statement, because there are so many different ways to tag the same thing and so many ways to interpret the same tag), but I think that tags might become useful if a) they use some language to describe their relation to the object that is beeing tagged and b) they become active not only by beeing searchable on technorati, but by beeing something useful themselves. A link, for example.

That is why my resolver concept does not involve tags, but URIs. Any URI can be resolved into many other URIs that have some relation to the inital URI. These results can then themselves be resolved again.

Unfortunately, I had to find out that creating an open resolver net unlike DNS is hard, hard, hard. Maybe impossible, if you want to come up with some sort of reliable results.

Whether you are using WordPress or another blogging tool, there are many choices you have for setting your tags manually, or through one of the many tag plugins or add-ons, if your blogging tool permits them. For an example of how to tag your posts simply and easily manually, see A Tagging Bookmarklet for WordPress and wordpress.com Users. It will work for whatever blogging service you use, with a few minor tweaks.

As for the good and bad of tagging, I think of tags as more of an index, where categories are more like tables of contents. When I know the specific thing I'm searching a site for, I may head to tags. But if I'm searching for a general subject, I hit categories first like a table of contents or outline to help me find what I'm looking for.

I think tags have been blown out of proportion, but they also serve a purpose to increase navigation on your own site. If you choose to offer links offsite, guiding reader's away, then have a good reason. The resources of Wikipedia are good reasons. Consider the benefit of helping reader's find related content on your site by using onsite tags. It's a great way of increasing your site's navigation.

I hope this information helps. As you mentioned, there is a lot of confusion about tags. They have some wonderful benefits, including increasing keywords. There is a lot to learn about them, though.
