Sopranos: Failure to spoil
Sopranos : Failure to spoil

Actually, there's a huge spoiler in this post if you didn't see the first episode of the new season.

I can't believe I posted predictions about the new season and did not post what I've told a few people was my hope for the show: Kill Tony in the first episode and tell the entire story in flashback. That way we get over the "What happens to Tony?" question, which is always up to the semi-arbitrary whim of the writers, and can focus on how and why it happens. Now that looks like a real possibility for the show.

The first episode was, IMO, brilliant.

Backtracking is a nice technique, especially for dramas. Yo, see my post about The "Sopranos" and hit me whatever feedback you get from what I've written.

Thanks in advance.

Brilliant? Fahgedaboudit. If you could set aside all the product placements (Nestle chocolate mix on the model train? Porsche Cayenne shoved down our throats several times?), why did they spend the entire episode about that minor hitman character (who always was just background in the first five seasons) whining about moving to Florida just to have him offing himself? What a waste of time, just to show that the FBI has informants everywhere. Yeah, we got it in the exposition.

But then again, I recall that the first episode of every new season in the past has been weak, filled with too-quick cuts to give everyone non-plot screen time. Don' worry. It'll get bedda. (But nice to see they've resumed outfitting Lorraine Bracco in short skirts! Wowza!)

Yeah, the product placements suck. Disruptive. And greedy.

If the season is going to be in flashbacks, we'll find out what drove the hitman to suicide. If not, I thought it still fit in well because it let Tony "delegate" the job of turning him down to Silvio (sp). Plus, it set up the notion that you can't retire, which may turn out to be important.

The fact that Tony's phone was out of battery I thought was slipped in a little too conspicuously. But now I'm just nitpicking.

I'm kind of skeptical that Tony died. Why? Because HBO did not show promos for next week's episode. That's not to say he didn't die, but if HBO were to promo a funeral or hospital scene, it would give away whether or not Tony was killed.

Maybe I missed him, but I don't remember seeing Paulie in the first episode.

Did anyone see him?

If not, that might support the flashback theory... That Paulie was whacked in the previous 15 months.
