I suppose that if all the little tags underneath the beetles were colour-coded, it would provide a more rapid orientation to where one is amongst the big pile of beetles ... given all the work that has obviously gone into the ledger, I presume that would give just that lttle bit of extra oomph to the "All of it together is". Information visualization.

And that would be just a classification system made visible ... a neat addition would be to think through the colour coding to surface and make visible overlaps or bridges from one class to the next (and any linkages between seemingly disparate clumps or groupings).

And I'm probably just saying something that has been wondered at, mentioned, or known already for a long, long time already.

Knowledge is what exists in people's minds. What you are looking at is a reference work, a particularly interesting reference because it's authoritative. But it's information, but it's not knowledge.

Antoin, if this isn't knowledge, then nothing is...and perhaps you think nothing is. I don't. But, whatever we call this - knowledge or authoritative information - it seems clearly to me not to be in our minds! My point was the opposite: Knowing that this bug is of that species requires an enormous institutional and physical apparatus that is out in the world, not in our mind.

Knowledge is what you or other people know. Only a sentient can have knowledge. A filing cabinet cannot know things.

Just because something doesn't exist in the world, in a place where we can observe it separate from everything else doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

One way to think about the distinction between knowledge and infomation is to think of the act of transferring knowledge as the act of 'information'. The word 'information' is derived from the verb 'to inform'.

I accept that the collection provides a framework for shared knowledge (in the same way that a language does).

When we translate information it becomes knowledge if we can retrieve it, a statistic if we can't.

That's not to say translations make knowledge true. They may make it real. But that's another issue. Also, I do not presume to speak for the beetles, the rocks, or the filing cabinets.

As side note see the know nothing party

The notion that knowledge is a special case of information is very very modern. That doesn't mean it's wrong, but it probably does ;) I am reluctant to consider knowledge within an epistemology that assumes that we work basically the same way as computers do, if only because that that would require jettisoning a vocabulary that we have developed over the course of centuries, a vocabulary that includes words like "perception," "experience" and "judgment." It's very hard for me to imagine understanding knowledge without terms like those. Put differently: I really don't believe you and I are information processors.

As for my point about knowledge not being mental: Without the cabinets and institutions (etc.), we cannot know that this insect is that genus-species because the chain of evidence is broken. Wipe out the cabinets and the institutions, and our knowledge becomes unmoored. Thus, knowing requires the cabs and insts. Without the cabs and insts, the mental act isn't knowing, just as forming a mental image with your eyes closed isn't seeing.

Well, it's a framework for scientific knowledge, in the same way that language is a framework for social interaction. Knowledge is a social construct as well as an internal mental one.
