The good of file sharing

As we try to balance the rights of artists to be compensated, let’s be willling to blurt out a plain truth: It is good that we can find millions of songs on the Internet and listen to them for free. This is a good thing.

That’s not to say that it is the ultimate good that must be honored or that it’s more important compared with the rights of creators. But can we at least acknowledge that living in a world where we can listen to the world’s music is a good thing?

  1. it is very very good and it’s more important than the rights of the major packagers and resellers, which is what the fight is about anyway. file sharing is bringing us closer, i think, to the space where creative people can sell their product to the world and all of us can find new and inspiring, or old favorite material without intervention and abuse from folks who only know and care about the profit potential.

  2. Of course, it’d be better if the industry embraced file sharing instead of fighting what will ultimately be a losing battle against it, but they’re so short sighted they can’t see the benefits of being able to promote their artists’ music directly to the people that count – the fans – in the most direct and cost effective way possible – p2p. The face of the music industry stands to lose a nose very shortly if someone doesn’t wake up.

  3. file sharing kicks ass
